Menu and Wine Selection

Wines of the Ball were selected with care in order to present Hungarian specialties.

Garamvári Winery – Brut Nature (méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine, Southern Balaton Wine Region)
It is a very nice, harmonic sparkling wine that was made without dosage, therefore it is highly recommended for the fans of really dry wines. There is an elegant balance of acids and bubbles in the wine. Thanks to autolysis, characteristics of the méthode traditionnelle are obvious in this wine. Aromas in the taste are moderately fruity with a nice almond aftertaste.

Garamvári Winery – Evolution Rosé Rosé (rosé sparkling wine from Pinot Noir, Southern Balaton Wine Region)
It is a high quality rosé sparkling wine with definite characteristics to Pinot Noir grape variety, like strawberry, raspberry and cherry. Nice acidity embraces hints of cookies in the aftertaste.

Kamocsay Winery – Prémium Ihlet Cuvée 2015 (Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Hárslevelű white wine from Neszmély Wine Region)
Mr Ákos Kamocsay was awarded with the Winemaker of the Year prize in 1999. In this wine Hárslevelű is absolutely dominant and complemented by Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay. It has elegant aromas in the smell with hints of white flowers and fruits.

Apátsági Winery – Welschriesling 20152015 (elegant and aromatic white wine from Pannonhalma Wine Region) Welschriesling has great traditions in Pannonhalma and wines from this grape variety are especially rich in aromas and show complexity.

Szepsy Winery – Hasznos Furmint 2013 (matured white wine with crisp acidity, Tokaj Wine Region)
It is a very nice and complex white wine from 2013, when weather conditions in Hungary were not that ideal for the grape, however, this wine has outstanding balance.

Takler Winery – Blaufränkisch Réserve 2013 (barrique red wine, Szekszárd Wine Region)
This wine was made from the grapes harvested from the best slopes of the wine region, mainly from old vine plants. Sour cherry, dried plum and warm spiciness are obvious in its aromas.

Gere Attila Winery – Solus 2009 (barrique red wine, Szekszárd Wine Region)
This wine was made from the grapes harvested from the best slopes of the wine region, mainly from old vine plants. Sour cherry, dried plum and warm spiciness are obvious in its aromas.

Holdvölgy Winery – Tokaji Aszú 2008 (noble rot sweet wine, Tokaj Wine Region)
It is a marvellous wine with aromas like vanilla, fruits, herbal plants, apricot and also bread and cookies. It is full-bodied and dense with great concentration. It is also important that 2008 was a great vintage for aszú making.

Kamocsay Winery – Prémium Chardonnay Páskum Slope 2015 (Chardonnay white wine, Neszmély Wine Region)
This is a complex wine with crisp acidity and concentration. It has a nice, pale gold colour with intense fruity aromas like apricot, citrus and white flowers.

Gál Tibor Award

It has been a tradition since 2006 that the Gál Tibor Award is announced during the Ball of Hungarian Wines. Tibor Gál was an exceptional oenologist and winemaker from Eger and played a key role in modern-day Hungarian wine history, we can find his name even in international professional literature.

Based on our traditions we renewed the Gál Tibor Award in 2014 in order to enable wine-loving audience to meet new experts besides the well-known winemakers. Recipients of the Winemaker of the Year Award and Winemaker’s Winemaker Award recommend a winemaker from their wine region to whom the proper attention has not been paid before. Recommended names will be posted on our website and Facebook page at the beginning of 2017 and audience can vote for them. Since 2014 in addition to the honour, the Gál Tibor Award contains an online advertisement package of 500 000 HUF.
